For many medical offices around the country, plastic laminate casework is typically the answer.

It seems almost everyone and everything has gone green these days, and with talk of climate change continually in the media, it’s little wonder why. While you might remember your commitment to a greener world when you’re composting or using the water in your rain barrels, it can be a bit tougher to see how to incorporate it as you sit on the planning committee of a new lab. Even in educational and commercial laboratories across the country, though, going green can play a factor, and LEED designed lab casework can help you meet that goal.

What is LEED? LEED Certified

There are lots of terms associated with today’s green revolution, and LEED is one of many. The acronym actually stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, and it is part of an initiative by the U.S. Green Building Council to help encourage professionals to design and build buildings and structures that are a bit more environmentally appropriate. There are a number of different categories within LEED goals including sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, innovation and design process, and regional priority.

How Does It Apply to Casework?

The casework for that new lab primarily falls into the materials and resources category.  In order to get that LEED certification, you’ll want to choose sustainable materials or those that use recycled components to be more ecologically friendly. Still lost as to even how that works? Here are a few examples that may help.

  • Those hardwood, veneers, and plywood choices that come from forests that are FSC managed are considered to be fully sustainable. The timber there is rapidly regenerated and the soil and site productivity is carefully protected and managed.
  • Steel choices can also be considered green because it can be made from sheet steel that contains scrap material that comes from old cars, appliances, and manufacturing fall off.

Don’t feel limited by going with LEED certification, though. There are still lots of options available to you. The key here is to talk to your designer and project management about your goals. It’s the only way to make sure every scrap of material that goes into your new lab is actually meeting your overall green goals.

The Benefits

Not sure why you should even consider LEED casework for your new lab? There are actually a number of different reasons.

  • Tax Credits: There are ongoing tax credits for certified LEED facilities that may help your organization save some money at the end of the year, something that’s certain to make the accounting staff a bit happier.
  • Smaller Price Tag: It may seem odd, but LEED materials often come with a far smaller price tag than even traditional materials, helping to put more money back into your project budget.
  • It’s Healthier: LEED materials often have fewer associated health problems than more traditional materials today, and that can be an excellent choice for those employees or students who will be in there on a daily basis.

To learn more about LEED certifications and materials, contact your designer or project manager.

It might be the very first thing they see when they walk in your office, and even if it isn’t, you can be sure that it’s going to leave a big impression. It’s your reception desk, and while you could certainly go with an off-the-shelf model you got at some giant office store, having one customized to meet your needs and the overall style of your office is going to say volumes about your company.

Why Go Custom?

A customized choice has much to offer your company. Take a look at these benefits.

  • Meet Your Existing Style: Carroll Seating U of Missouri Hospital 2Whether you’re having your office renovated or you simply want a new look to your reception area, going with a customized choice means the styles will match perfectly. The last thing you want is for your style choices to clash right where your clients are going to be trying to decide if you’re the right company to move forward with.
  • Create a More Functional Space: Customizing your reception desk means you get something that actually works. If you need more drawer space, better desktop area, or even task lighting, customization is the perfect way to get it.
  • Inspire Creativity: There’s nothing quite like customization to help serve as an inspiration for the entire workspace. The more unique, the more likely you are to continually build that culture of innovation throughout your entire space.

There are some team members who have such an impact on the way you do business that you think you’ll never be able to function without them. When tragedy strikes and they’re suddenly gone, that empty hole threatens to consume the entire way you do business. You pick up and move on, but the loss is so massive that you know you have to do something to help you honor that individual’s memory.

Anita Frazier Conf Room 5For us, that person was Anita Frazier. Anita passed in February of 2013, and while we knew we had to move forward with our day to day business operations, we needed something that would always keep her memory in our hearts.  Thus the idea for the Anita Frazier Memorial Conference Room was born. Completed in November 2013, we worked hard to showcase our design skills and products in this one package, helping to show what a strong company Anita helped to make us. The door is a custom millwork creation from Kohout Woodwork. It has a unique glass inlay that is nothing short of gorgeous.

Both the custom conference table and the elevated credenza (also customized to meet our exact needs) were provided by Kohout Woodwork as well. The granite tops you see were provided by Fabricor, and they were an absolute must for this environment. Because so many of our meetings are right here, both internal and those with clients, we needed the best possible seating, so we turned to Euro Tech Seating for the chairs you see. They combine comfort, durability, and functionality in one package. The whiteboard came from Idea Paint and the custom sign with our name was a product of Signs Now. All of the electrical components were provided by Valentino Electric.

It’s our design, our products, our best. Thanks for pushing us forward Anita. We miss you!

The best casework is as beautiful as it is functional, and nowhere does that need to be more true than in the world of student housing. Student housing these days is changing fast. What was once a fairly simple concept gets more intricate every year as colleges and universities try to attract students to their housing facilities. Students are often used to living in their own rooms with direct access to their own kitchens, so moving into a dorm environment where there may be up to four people to a room with little access to options like kitchens is a tough sell. As a result, more higher education institutions are working to make those dorms seem just a bit more like home, providing even single person rooms and kitchen areas for just a few people at a time. It helps to make students feel a little more at home and keeps them on campus longer.

The Casework

200395566-001A big part of this shift on the part of colleges, though, is creating the right atmosphere and environment, and good casework is part of that. Often it demands a beautiful, customized solution, not an off-the-shelf product that’s available just anywhere. Students typically need a durable work surface, among other things. They typically need closet spaces, vanities, and desk areas. In some cases, a kitchen counter is a must, as is cabinetry to hold kitchen gear. The best dorms also come with security desks, mail rooms, and more.

Choosing the first cut-rate product available, though, simply won’t do for today’s generation of students. Instead, aesthetics must combine with functionality. After all, with so many different housing choices on the market for today’s very mobile students, creating an attractive living space is as important as creating a convenient one is.

Today’s colleges and universities must think about that beauty in conjunction with durability that will hold up month after month, year after year, student after student. Working with the right company has to be part of the equation. The ideal company will not only provide solutions from some of the best known casework brands out there today, but they’ll also provide the level of turnkey support that most institutions find so necessary. From the early design stages to the actual installation and service phase, finding that one company who can handle everything is typically the best way to save time and money when it comes to casework in the world of student housing.

Student housing certainly isn’t what it once was, and it’s not headed back into that territory any time soon. Beautiful casework can help provide a better dorm environment that will prove attractive for students in the years to come.

Whether you’re designing a new space or renovating an old one with a new purpose in mind, your lab’s casework is always going to be central to what you’re trying to do. There’s a good reason for that. The right casework can mean the ideal work surfaces, great storage, and the ability to move seamlessly through your environment, no matter what the task ahead. The wrong casework is always going to stand in your way as you try to get things done. The answer? Jamestown Metal Products. With a variety of amazing choices, you’ll find comprehensive offerings that are ideal in a number of settings.

Shelving

In most settings, Jamestown-metal-lab-productsshelving has to be incredibly flexible to help fit the ongoing needs of your lab’s current projects. All of Jamestown’s shelving options are made with thick steel for added durability. From those that work well as stand alone units to those that are ideal above back to back workspaces, the choices from Jamestown are ideal for inexpensive, flexible storage. You can even design custom-fit solutions that ship far quicker than you may have imagined.

Cabinetry

Jamestown’s cabinets are all made from heavy gauge steel and fully welded so performance into the future of your lab will never be a problem. All of the base units can hold 500 pounds per linear foot, and they also come in a variety of color choices to help create the feel you really want. They also include added features like fully enclosed toe spaces, structurally sound doors and drawers for sound deadening, and easy cleaning features. Shelves are fully adjustable, and some include a cut out for service access. There are also unique options like corner cabinets that can help work dead space out of your lab’s plan.

Work Surfaces

Jamestown offers both custom and in stock work surfaces to meet your needs. They come in both black epoxy and phenolic resin, both of which are chemical resistant. They’re a full inch thick, and the front edges are finished. With a sink cut out, without, or even for corner cabinet work surfaces, Jamestown can find the right product to meet your needs.

Additional Options

The product line from Jamestown Metal hardly stops there, though. They also have fume hoods, faucets, electrical pedestals, gas fittings, and all of the safety equipment your lab needs as well.

The difference with a company like Jamestown Metal Products is clear. With the inventory you need in stock for your lab now as well as turnkey services to help you design an amazing workspace, turning to this company as you redesign (or initially design) your lab is an absolute must.

Often today’s office environments are defined by a culture of mobility and portability. Carrying that trend all the way through your office can have a huge impact on the feel of your space.
